Welcome from the FLIE Director

Welcome to the University of Kentucky’s Foreign Language and International Economics Program! FLIE is an inclusive program that trains students in the cultural competence, communicative skills and economic knowledge to prepare them for future career opportunities in many fields. We currently have 58 majors studying eight world languages including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. Our faculty work closely with students on course planning, education abroad advising, scholarship applications, and internship opportunities. The FLIE Club is a student organization that aims to create a sense of community for all FLIE majors by organizing exciting events and activities. The biggest event each year is the FLIE Alumni Event, when we invite outstanding alumni to talk with students and share their experiences and advice on how to build a successful career with this degree.

Majoring in Foreign Language and International Economics is an excellent choice for many reasons. You can:

  • Acquire language skills in two departments, Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures & Cultures (MCLLC) and Hispanic Studies. Our program includes options in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.
  • Train to be linguistically and culturally competent and develop economic and business skills to embrace global opportunities:
  • Get UK credit for a language-specific internship. We strive to provide students with internship opportunities to prepare them for future careers. We are building language-specific internships for FLIE majors at local companies, so that students can practice and improve their linguistic and cultural skills in real working environment.
  • Build future career domestically and internationally. After graduation, our students go on to use their education in North America and internationally as business leaders, intelligence officers, and entrepreneurs, to name a few.

If you are thinking about applying to the University of Kentucky to start or continue your educational journey, I invite you to explore our program site and plan a visit to UK. I would be happy to answer any questions or meet with you on campus. My email is below.
